Lights Out? Not Quite…

When the nights draw in I start to dream of light. I begin laying plans for a trip to to the Amsterdam Light Festival. Sadly, COVID swiftly dashed even the most tentative hopes I might have had of making my annual visit. With a 10-day isolation period “strongly suggested” by the Netherlands government and a similar 14 days required on return to UK, the usual short break or long weekend was pretty much impossible.

For the organisers of the 9th Edition of the festival, things have been even more challenging.  Social distancing requirements made the customary canal tours of the artworks – large-scale public art created on a light-related theme – impossible. It had been hoped that the Light Walk, a guided tour in small groups, would take place. This too has been cancelled.

Residents of Amsterdam will still see the light art without formal tours as they pass by. This year’s theme was to reflect humanity’s relationship with nature, aptly chosen in the current circumstances. No doubt this will present locals with opportunity for contemplation. Those of us overseas will have to make do with an online experience.
